The cover letter should briefly go over your background and skills. The letter should also include why you want to join the Kirchdoerfer lab specifically. I delete a lot of applications with cover letters that fail to mention either our lab or our research. Convince me that you are genuinely interested in what we do and create a picture of how you could be a part of it.
